You know, I used to think I was pretty handy at looking after myself. I’m a brown belt in karate, and I take my black belt grading later this year. I know I’m not Superman, but I’d like to think I could handle myself if I got into a scrape. Then I went to a mixed martial arts contest and saw these guys do san shou kickboxing, and I felt like giving up there and then. These guys are phenomenal!

In case you don’t know, this is kickboxing taken to the next level: seriously, these guys know no fear! I have a buddy who practices Muay Thai, and I told him about what I saw, and he said that he’d be wary about taking on someone that’s been trained in san shou. If you can imagine taking all the best bits of Chinese freestyle fighting, so you can use kicks, punches, throws, you name it, then times it by ten, and you might be getting close.

So, like I said, I was knocked out (no pun intended!) by what the san shou fighters could do, so I decided to do a little digging. And what I found out just blew me away no wonder I was impressed at the show. This particular martial art has been practiced for 2000 years, and pretty much allows any kind of combat going. I already told you that they mix in Chinese freestyle; you can add submission wrestling and ground fighting to that scary list! If you think the UFC guys are tough, you ain’t seen nothing yet!

What really surprised me is how popular the sport is. I’d never heard of it before, never mind seen a bout. But now that I know what it is, I can see why the likes of ESPN carry it on pay-per-view, as this type of fighting is more exciting than any I’ve seen so far. The rules are pretty simple, too, so it’s easy to follow for any newcomer. And yes, I include myself there!

Fighting in a ring similar to any other martial arts ring, bouts are won by either throwing or pushing your opponent out the ring, or in the more vicious bouts in China, by knocking your opponent out with elbow strikes or knee strikes. Because there are no ropes and they fight often on a raised ring, this makes for some heavy-duty knockouts and that’s why I’ve fallen in love with it. There’s no sparring here these guys are seriously trying to knock each other spark out! This is true, full contact fighting at its best, and probably one of the best systems being taught today.

Don’t believe me? Think about this then in an annual competition between Chinese san shou kickboxers and American kickboxers, the competition (if you could call it that!) had to be stopped since the Americans were getting their butts kicked literally! In the last competition, the san shou guys won all four fights. Not bad for a little-known discipline, huh?

So yeah, like I was saying. I thought I was pretty good. And maybe at karate, I am. But now I know that’s not the be all and end all it might be a little bit late, but I’m taking up san shou. Then I might give my kickboxing buddy a little surprise or two

These days its hardly surprising to find oneself having to fight strangers in the streets. So one really have to learn some tricks to win the fights in any way that you can, otherwise you wil surely be left with some black eye, dislocated wrists, and also concussion.

Like always best solution to win a street fight is to avoid one. It will be great if a dispute is resolved without any brawls and yes, better not let your treacherous ego cloud your common sense. In violent confrontations, make sure to be neutral and calm; apologize, even if its not your fault or the opponent is a regular no gooder and yes, do so in a confident manner. If he persists, clearly tell him to back off. Never let your opponent get near you and don’t be a fool and let him hit you first. As he nears, change your stance in a fighting position and just slam your outstretched open hand into his face. This is a great tactic to disorient the opponent. Well if you have to punch, keep your hand, wrist, and two largest in a straight line, and punch with those two knuckles as hard and fast as possible. Follow this with swift kicks to the knees or groin areas. However unless you are a good puncher, better not pound unnecessarily.

Best tactic is non punch hand strikes and palm strikes against the side of the head and neck. Also low kicks aimed at shins, ankles, the insides of calves is very effective. And yep, all those scratching, biting, clawing, spitting, hair pulling hair are good too. Remember you are in a street fight and that too with a rowdy aggressor, so don’t think about rules, just think about your safety.

Know your limit too. Alone and fighters ganging up on you? Well run! Its not cowardice, its safety actually. A winner always knows when to quit.

Also always keep at a distance from your opponent, say about twice the arm’s length. Experts opine that staying close limits your opponent’s ability to land painful punches. As a matter of fact, keep on the opponents side and not directly in front of him. Also those involved in street fights with more than one opponent, make sure to move in such a way as to keep them in each other’s way. Staying between them is fatal!

Make sure to attack any vulnerable spot. Also just blocking an opponent with your arms or legs leaves the rest of your body in the way. And yes, punches and hits in the face, throat, temples will incapacitate your opponent making them blury and howling in pain, and disorientated for sometime, enough seconds for you to make an exit.

When involved in these street fights, unless you are a mean fighter, you will be punched to a pulp. So the best tip to win the fight is to impede your opponents as much as possible, use sand, dirt, mace, or other sprays on the eyes, thereby you can run. Fighting should be the last resort, and if you can talk your way out of a fight that’s one real winner too.

Conflict is present in all intimate relationships. Whether conflict is resolved constructively or acted out destructively is what determines its impact on the relationship. The following suggestions are designed to help couples resolve conflict by teaching them how to fight fairly.

• Create a "circuit breaker" that will prevent fights from escalating out of control. Establish a special code word (e.g. "time-out!") that signals a "cease fire." Even a comical word can break the cycle of tension. If you feel out of control, you will probably need to temporarily remove yourself from the situation. If so, make a definite time and place to continue the conversation.

• Avoid "letting it all hang out." Tragically, cruel statements made in the heat of battle tend to be long remembered and seldom forgiven. Anger research demonstrates that venting aggression doesn’t resolve anger, but merely rehearses it. Repetitive explosions in the service of "telling it like it is" may push partners even further away and rarely alter the circumstances that are making one feel angry in the first place.

• Identify the feelings underlying your anger. Anger often functions as a protective shield against feelings that are more difficult to express, such as sadness, powerlessness or a fear of intimacy.

• Avoid the tendency to chronically complain. Many couples seem unable to distinguish between ordinary life events and issues that really matter. Before complaining, reflect on questions such as: "Is my partner’s behavior really bad for our relationship?" This allows one to see the Big Picture rather than the Little Behavior.

• Cultivate an attitude of respect. The word respect is derived from respicere, a Greek word which means "the willingness to look again." Our willingness to see our partners as human beings who deserve to be treated with dignity and kindness is basic to a healthy relationship. Without this respect, a healthy relationship isn’t possible.

• Change yourself and your relationship will change. Most power struggles are rooted in trying to get someone else to change. This battle usually becomes the biggest obstacle to change and healing. As an experiment, focus on what you can do differently instead of on what you feel your partner "should" be doing.

• Remember that timing is everything. Many destructive fights occur when one partner feels "ambushed." Before unloading on your partner, try an approach such as: "Something has come up for me - is now a good time to talk about it?" This can create an appropriate context for dialogue at a time when you are both open to it.

• Beware of the ABC’s inherent in most arguments - Accusation, Blame, and Coercion. Consider changing your focus from asking "Who’s to blame here?" to "How do we get on the same team?" Speak about your experience and feelings. For example: "I feel upset that you criticized me in front of your family." "I" statements promote self-responsibility and avoid the blaming quality of "You!" statements.

• While your partner is talking listen as non-defensively as you can. If you’re already preparing your rebuttal in your head, you aren’t really listening.

• Be willing to acknowledge and validate your partner’s feelings. Many times in couples work, this is the point where one spouse turns to me and says: "But I don’t agree with what she’s saying!" Validating your partner doesn’t mean that they are right, or that you agree with them. It simply means that you are demonstrating your willingness to understand. Use reflective listening statements such as: "Let me see if I understand you - I hear you saying that…." This will allow your partner to feel heard and ensures that you understand, rather than assume, what is being shared.

• Avoid trying to fix the problem immediately. Make sure both of you fully understand the issue before attempting a "quick fix." Communication is a process that takes time.

• Ask clearly and directly for what you want - and wait! Individuals who are not experienced in assertive communication have a tendency to prematurely "erase" their request - "Oh, forget it - I knew it was too much to ask." Give your partner time to internally process the request, even if it means coming back to it in a few days. You then have a better chance of reaching a lasting agreement that will work for both of you. It would be naïve to suggest that these skills will be mastered by reading one article - it takes practice. However, making a positive intention to "fight fairly" and then taking a simple step, such as creating a weekly couples meeting, can lead to immediate improvement. Finally, if you find yourself getting stuck, consider seeking short-term help from a counselor with specific expertise in couples’s communication and conflict resolution. Great relationships are worth fighting for.
